Vietnam's e-commerce is on the recovery

Vietnam's e-commerce is on the recovery

Monday 22, 02 2021
The total number of visits to top 50 e-commerce platforms in Vietnam increased by 13% compared to the first 6 months of 2020. In particular, fashion and apparel industry has dominated e-commerce platforms when it witnessed a 33% growth in website traffic.

2020 marked a time of turmoil due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic. The pandemic has caused a change in people's online consumption behavior, leading to a significant impact on business activities of many companies.

The report by iPrice Group and SimilarWeb in the fourth quarter of 2020 showed that there was a change in online-shopping demand and the traffic volume of the top 50 e-commerce platforms in Vietnam.

Fashion industry grew by 33%

The fourth quarter saw a positive growth for most of e-commerce businesses. The total number of visits to the top 50 websites in Vietnam E-Commerce Map increased by 13% compared to the first 6 months of 2020. It can be seen that the demand for online shopping of people was higher when the rate had decreased by 8% in the same period in 2019.

One of the reasons for the growth in online consumption is the psychology of buyers. When the Covid-19 pandemic was well controlled in Vietnam, people became more optimistic, and so they spent more money.

In addition, massive discounts from e-commerce platforms and their partners in late 2020 campaigns such as Singles Day (11.11), Black Friday (27/11), Cyber Monday (30/11), 12/12, etc.  were an opportunity for consumers to buy their desired products.

Fashion industry grew by 33%

The t has taken the spotlight when it saw a 33% growth in website traffic after falling significantly in the first two quarters of 2020. It can be said that one of the reasons for this increase is the higher demand for beautiful outfit at year-end festivals, especially Tet holiday.

The two industries with the fastest growth rates in the beginning of this year were groceries and health, which tended to be more stable in the second half of the year, with 10% and 7% growth respectively.

The mobile equipment industry increased 7% compared to the first 6 months of the year, while the electronics industry experienced a 5% growth. Although the figures are not too significant, this is a good sign that most industries are on the rise.

Rankings of e-commerce businesses in the last three months of 2020

Despite facing many changes due to the impact of the global epidemic, the ranking of Vietnamese e-commerce platforms in 4Q/2020 remained the same as that in the previous quarter.

According to the report by iPrice Group and SimilarWeb, Shopee Vietnam got more than 68.5 million average visits in the last three months of the year and became the platform with the highest number of visits, an increase of more than 30.6 million compared to the same period in 2019. Currently, Shopee Vietnam has been the number one in traffic visits for 10 consecutive quarters.

Rankings of e-commerce businesses in the last three months of 2020

There was a difference of 1.4 million visits to the websites of Tiki and Lazada Vietnam in the last three months of the year, with 22.2 and 20.8 million respectively in Q4. Meanwhile, Sendo maintained its 10th position in the list with 11.2 million unique visits.

Holding the second position was The Gioi Di Dong. With 31.4 million visits, it became the domestic enterprise with the highest average number of visits in the 4th Quarter.

According to the Department of E-Commerce and Digital Economy, Vietnam's e-commerce grew impressively in 2020 with an increase of 18%. The market size was about 11.8 billion USD, accounting for 5.5% of total retail sales of consumer goods and services nationwide.
And with this development momentum, e-commerce businesses will have more opportunities and face a lot of challenges as well when platforms have to constantly change and meet the needs of consumers.

“Rapid growth” can come with certain risks. However, the desire to achieve sustainable and profitable growth is a safe idea in times of upheaval due to external factors.
