Vietnam business investment saw positive results in the first two months this year. Vietnam has attracted the FDI value of USD 5.46 billion - Vietnamcredit trustworthy insights.

The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to be a major obstacle to attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). However, for the first two months of 2021, there are still positive signs. 

According to the Foreign Investment Agency, the total newly registered, adjusted, and contributed capital, and purchased shares of foreign investors in the first two months of 2021 reached USD 5.46 billion. This FDI figure was equivalent to 84.4% of that in the same period last year.

Also, in this period, there were 126 new projects which were granted with investment registration certificates, with a total registered capital of USD 3.31 billion, decreasing by 33.9% year over year. 115 projects adjusted their investment capital, with a total additional registered capital reached USD 1.61 billion, up 2.5 times over the same period last year.

Besides, the last two months recorded 445 times of capital contribution and share purchase by foreign investors, down 71.9% over the same period last year, with a total capital contribution value of USD 543.1 million, down 34.4% year over year.

In the past two months, 46 countries and territories have invested in 17 sectors in Vietnam, in which the processing and manufacturing sectors hold the leading positions, with a capital of over USD 3 billion, equivalent to 55.7%. The following positions belonged to the sectors of electricity production and distribution with a capital of USD 1.44 billion (or 26.5%), real estate with USD 485 million, and science & technology with nearly USD 153 million. 

Japan had the largest total investment of USD 1.64 billion, followed by Singapore and South Korea, with a total registered investment capital of USD 1.07 billion and 1.05 billion, respectively.

Countries Investment

Regarding cities and provinces that receive investment, Can Tho attracted the lion’s share of FDI with USD 1.31 billion, equivalent to 24.2% of the total. Hai Phong ranked second with nearly USD 918 million, accounting for 16.8%, followed by Bac Giang with nearly US$ 573 million (or 10.5%).

Moreover, the value that the foreign-invested sector has earned from exportation was USD 38.07 billion, increasing by 34% compared to the same period last year, and accounting for 76.1% of the total export turnover. On the importation side, USD 31.6 billion was spent on the importation, increasing by 31.2% year over year, and making up 66.6% of the total import turnover. Thus, the trade surplus reached about USD 6.5 billion.

According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the foreign investment into Vietnam continued to record positive results. The rate of decline has been decreasing gradually compared to the same period last year. The realized capital of foreign direct investment projects was estimated at USD 2.5 billion, up 2% over the same period in 2020.
