Top billion-dollar companies in Vietnam (3Q2023)

There were 13 out of 24 businesses that recorded net profit growth in the third quarter, of which the highest increase belonged to Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (Code: BSR).

VHM – the profit champion

As of the afternoon of October 31, there were more than 900 businesses on HOSE, HNX and UPCoM publishing financial reports. About 43% of these companies had revenue growth and 35% recorded an increase in net profit in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.

Statistics show that 24 businesses recorded net profits of over VND 1,000 billion in the third quarter. Including 14 banks, two real estate businesses, and two companies in the oil and gas sector.

There were 13/24 businesses that recorded an increase in net profit in the third quarter, the highest belonging to Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (Code: BSR). Businesses with declining profits in the last quarter are mainly in the banking group.

Vinhomes Joint Stock Company (Code: VHM) continues to be the profit champion on the stock exchange with a net profit of VND 10,695 billion, but this figure decreased by 26% compared to the same period last year.

Vinhomes' total net revenue reached VND 32,700 billion in the last quarter, an increase of 84% over the same period in 2022, equivalent to the previous quarter. A major contribution to Vinhomes' profits is the handover of 2,400 low-rise real estate units at the Vinhomes Ocean Park 3 mega project.

In addition to Vinhomes, another unit in the Vin ecosystem, Vincom Retail Joint Stock Company (Code: VRE), reported a profit of VND 1,317 billion in the third quarter, an increase of 66% compared to the third quarter of last year. This is Vincom Retail's record profit quarter and also the 6th quarter the business has reported consecutive profit growth.

Non-financial units with net profits of over trillion also include Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical, Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS - Code: GAS), Vietnam Airports Corporation (Code: ACV), Vietnam Airlines Group FPT Group (Code: FPT), Hoa Phat Group (Code: HPG), Masan Consumer Joint Stock Company (Masan Consumer - Code: MCH), Viettel International Investment Joint Stock Corporation (Viettel Global - Code: VGI), Joint Stock Corporation Saigon Beer - Wine - Beverages (Sabeco - Code: SAB).

In the third quarter, both ACV and FPT continued to break the profit peaks achieved in the second quarter. On the contrary, PV GAS, Viettel Global, and Sabeco had declining profits compared to the same period last year.

After two quarters of losses in the second half of last year, Hoa Phat's profits improved each quarter and reported a net profit of VND 2,005 billion in the third quarter, a loss of VND 1,774 billion in the same period last year. Although it reported a profit of trillions, the figure is still very low compared to the golden age of the "giant" in the steel industry.

Top 15 businesses with the highest revenue in the market

Statistics show that Petrolimex Group (Petrolimex - Code: PLX) continues to be the champion in net revenue in the third quarter with VND 72,414 billion but decreased by 2% compared to the same period last year.

Besides Petrolimex, two other representatives in the petroleum distribution group, Binh Son Refinery and Petrochemical and PV OIL, are also always leading regarding revenue on the stock exchange. All three businesses in the petroleum distribution group recorded a decrease in net revenue compared to the third quarter of 2022.

Among the 15 top companies by revenue, the company with the highest revenue growth is Vinhomes with an increase of 84%, in addition, the parent company Vingroup Group (Code: VIC) also recorded a revenue increase of 67% to record level of VND 47,948 billion.

In the third quarter, Vingroup recorded VND 30,281 billion in revenue from real estate transfer (up 82%), followed by revenue from production activities with VND 7,457 billion, nearly 3 times higher than the same period in 2022. Revenue from real estate rental segment; tourist hotel; hospitals and education fluctuated insignificantly.
