Decreasing ROA

Statistics from 27 listed commercial banks that have released their third quarter financial statements show that the return on total assets (ROA) in the last 4 quarters of banks is on a downward trend. The average ROA of 27 banks reached 1.27%, down 0.21 percentage points compared to the end of last year. Compared to the second quarter’s results, the average ROA of the above banks decreased by 0.07 percentage points.

Private banks continue to lead the ranking of banks with the highest ROA with MB, ACB and VIB holding the first three positions. Thanks to maintaining stable profit growth, MB took the top position with ROA in the last 4 quarters reaching 2.66%, down 0.06 percentage points compared to the beginning of the year.

Due to recording a decrease of 18.7% in profit after tax in the first 9 months of the year compared to the same period, Techcombank's ROA in the last 4 quarters has dropped from the first place to the fourth in the ROA ranking. At the same time, compared to the results of the previous quarter, Techcombank's ROA continued to decrease by 0.27 percentage points.

Techcombank

On the contrary, thanks to the growth in profit after tax of 11.3%, ACB's ROA increased slightly by 0.06 percentage points, helping this bank take the second place in the rankings, surpassing VIB. The fifth position in the ranking belongs to MSB, with ROA reaching 2.22%, unchanged from the beginning of the year and the previous quarter.

The remaining banks with ROA in the top 10 include OCB, Vietcombank, HDBank, TPBank and SeABank. Despite being the profit champion, Vietcombank's ROA is only ranked 7th in the rankings due to its large asset scale. The remaining two representatives in the Big4 group including BIDV and VietinBank are at the 17th and 16th place, respectively, with ROA at 0.96% and 1%.

In general, continuing the trend in the third quarter, the ROA of most banks is going down as total assets continue to grow and profit after tax declines.

There are 18/27 banks recording a decrease in ROA compared to the end of the fourth quarter of 2022. The sharp decline belonged to VPBank (1.76 points percent) and Techcombank (0.84 points percent). Meanwhile, thanks to strong profit growth, ROA of OCB and Sacombank increased by 0.36 percentage points and 0.28 percentage points, respectively.
