1. Ngành cao su Việt Nam (chủ yếu là cao su thiên nhiên) có những bước phát triển mạnh mẽ trong thời gian qua cả về sản lượng, chất lượng cũng như chủng loại sản phẩm.
2. Diện tích rừng trồng cao su cả nước và tại các vùng trồng cao su chủ yếu của Việt Nam liên tục tăng trong thời gian vừa qua. Trong giai đoạn từ năm 2000 đến 2008, tốc động tăng trưởng bình quân về diện tích cao su cả nước đạt hơn 4% năm. Đến năm 2008, dự kiến diện tích này đạt 601,8 nghìn ha. Chủ yếu tập trung ở vùng Đông Nam Bộ của nước ta, nơi có điều kiện tự nhiên thuận lợi.
3. Xét về cơ cấu của ngành, sản phẩm cao su chế biến công nghiệp của Việt Nam còn nhỏ, chỉ chiếm 10%. Hơn 90% còn lại là sản phẩm cao su tự nhiên và sơ chế. Tỷ trọng cao su xuất khẩu hiện nay mới chỉ chiếm khoảng 78% về mặt giá trị sản xuất. Tỷ trọng cao su tiêu dùng trong nước chiếm 22% trong tổng giá trị sản xuất.
4. Giá cao su trong nước biến động theo xu hướng của giá cao su trên thị trường thế giới. Trong năm 2008, giá cao su thế giới biến động phức tạp, trong 8 tháng đầu năm giá cao su tăng liên tục, trong khi đó xu hướng giảm giá lại là xu hướng chủ đạo của những tháng cuối năm. Đầu năm 2009 đến nay, giá cao su trên thị trường thế giới đã có dấu hiệu tăng trở lại.
5. Theo dự báo, ngành cao su Việt Nam sẽ có sự phát triển mạnh trong năm 2009 do nhu cầu trên thị trường thế giới tăng. Đây là một ngành có nhiều triển vọng phát triển trong tương lai.
