Vietnam’s paper import

Mr. Hoang Trung Son - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association, said that Vietnam has changed from a country that imports paper for consumption to a country that can export all kinds of paper, especially packaging. In the 5 years from 2015 to 2020, the export of the paper industry has increased by an average of over 65%/year.

Particularly, in 2021, the average output of the paper industry will reach over 25%/year, the demand for consumer paper will increase by over 12%/year, and imports will also increase from 3%/year on average.

According to the Association's forecast, in the period 2021-2025, Vietnam's paper industry will continue to maintain high growth momentum and make a breakthrough with the main products being packaging paper and tissue.

Exports outlook

The US is Vietnam's largest export market for paper and paper products, accounting for 26.2% of total export turnover.

The US is a market with a huge demand for importing paper and paper products, with an annual import turnover of about 15-17 billion USD. In the first 6 months of 2022 alone, the import of paper and paper products to the US has reached over 9.6 billion USD.

paper products

Imports of paper and paper products into the US in the first 6 months of 2022 are on an uptrend. Specifically, the US increased imports from markets such as Canada, which increased by 22.0% over the same period in 2021, China by 32.8%, Mexico by 28.6%, Germany by 32.1%, South Korea by 34.5%, etc. In contrast, the US reduced imports from Finland by 0.9%, Malaysia by 10.9%, and Israel by 25.6%.

Import of paper and paper products from Vietnam to the US market increased sharply in the first 6 months of 2022, up 47.3% over the same period in 2021. Currently, Vietnam is the 7th largest source of paper and paper products supplier to the US, out of a total of 161 countries and territories supplying this product to the US, accounting for nearly 2.9% of the market share.

The US's reduction in imports of paper and paper products from key markets such as Finland and a sharp increase in imports of this product from Vietnam in the context of Vietnam's market share of paper and paper products in the US remains low. The low will create opportunities for Vietnamese paper enterprises to expand their market share in the US in the coming time.
