Members of Chartered Accountants Worldwide (CAW) in Vietnam met for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi on March 4 and March 7, 2016, respectively. This is an activity initiated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales (ICAEW) in a bid to establish a Chartered Accountant community in Vietnam. Lord David Puttnam, British Prime Minister’s special envoy for social and cultural issues, attended the event.

Chartered Accountant is a prestigious title, earned by leading professionals in accounting, finance and business. They often hold highly influential positions such as business leaders, decision makers and trusted consultants in the largest listed firms, and the most active and important organisations around the world. These talented specialists, with their knowledge, experience, vision and a commitment of professionalism, ethics and integrity, are the driving engine that helps companies, organisations, individuals and communities to achieve their financial and strategic goals.

Addressing the event, Lord David Puttnam stressed again how Chartered Accountants’ significant roles and contributions help overall economic and social development. He also highly credited ICAEW’s efforts to put together the meeting and promote a bond between Chartered accountants in Vietnam, considering it as one of the activities that the British government encourages and fully supports in order to raise the bars for the finance profession in one of the most promising economies in the Southeast Asia.

Chartered Accountants Worldwide was initiated in February 2013 with originally six members, including repute Institutes of Chartered Accountants - CAI, ICAA, ICAEW, ICAS, NZICA and SAICA. Chartered Accountants Worldwide now has more than 310,000 member Chartered accountants in 180 countries, working to assist, develop and bolster the essential role that Chartered accountants can play to contribute to the global economy, as well as to cement members’ pledge to adhere to the highest norms in professional practice and ethics. That is also why 99% of the best brand names in the world use Chartered accountants.

Chartered Accountants Worldwide has 60 active members in Vietnam, who are leaders, financial managers or holders of other important positions in various agencies and organizations, both domestic and international.

It was the idea of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), one of the organisation’s founding members, to launch these first gatherings for the members in Vietnam on March 4 and March 7, 2016 in HCMC and Hanoi respectively. This has also been planned to be a quarterly activity to allow a strong build-up and development of the growing Chartered accountant community in Vietnam.

Attending the first CAW’s meeting in Vietnam, Mr David Anderson, a Chartered accountant from the Scotland Chartered Accountant Institute, said: “We applaud ICAEW for taking the lead in holding such a meaningful activity to provide Chartered accountants who live and work in Vietnam an opportunity to meet up and share work experience, and also to tighten the bond among members of this community. And today, we had the privilege of welcoming and meeting Chartered accountants from other founding members of Chartered Accountants Worldwide. That really is a great success that ICAEW deserves the credit for.”

Mr Mark Protherough, Vice President, ICAEW Global, also made it to this milestone event in Vietnam. He said: “Among the many organisations for Chartered accountants around the world, ICAEW is the only one having representation in Vietnam. So we are well aware of the responsibility and role we bear in initiating activities like this to create a bond and strengthen our commitment related to professionalism and ethics in Vietnam. CAW members are not only active in accounting and auditing, but also spread solidly over a number of fields. These events orchestrated by ICAEW in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City represent an effort to contribute to the bonding and overall development of the Chartered accountant community in Vietnam and the world as a whole.”

ICAEW is a world leading professional membership organisation that promotes, develops and supports over 145,000 chartered accountants in more than 160 countries worldwide.
