Biotechnology is a combination of modern technology and biology (microorganisms, plant and animal cells), which helps produce and create high-quality biological products.
In agriculture, biotechnology is studied for the application of microbiological technology to improve the digestive system of animals and their productivity; or to develop genetically modified organism, and increase the plant's resistance to pests and weeds. This contributes to providing access to a rich, nutritious food source and higher income for people as well as protecting the soil and water environment by reducing the use of pesticides and chemicals.
In pharmacology, researching and producing vaccines that help strengthen human immunity against dangerous pathogens such as SARS, avian influenza, or hepatitis virus is the achievements of biotechnology in this field. The most prominent are pharmaceuticals derived from natural herbs such as celery seed extract in support of gout treatment, or black garlic with the use of reducing cholesterol and blood fat.
In addition, biotechnology is also applied in the field of medicine to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies, such as research and development of genomic testing techniques in the human body which helps in early diagnosis and counseling on prenatal hereditary diseases, or stem cell technology research and applications in pharmacology to support cancer treatment, cost reduction and life prolongation for patients.
